Silvio Berlusconi explains who he would choose between Rafael Leao and Napoli star Kvicha Kvaratskhelia if he was still President of Milan and gives Zlatan Ibrahimovic advice.

The two teams face off at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Now the patron of mid-table Monza, Berlusconi was for over 30 years the chief of Milan and took them to become the most successful side in club football.

Inevitably, he is cheering on the Rossoneri this evening and spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about the current crop of players, asked if he would prefer Kvaratskhelia or Leao in his team.

“That is a tough one to answer, as they are two great players with different characteristics. Perhaps Kvaratskhelia is a more complete player, but having said that, Leao is more ‘Milan style’ for me. He has a way of playing that, in his best moments, reminds me of our greatest Milan stars.”

Kvaratskhelia is in his debut Serie A season, yet has already contributed 12 goals and as many assists in just 23 league games.

Rafael Leao was named Serie A Player of the Season for 2021-22, but so far this term has struggled with eight goals and seven assists, not finding the net since January 14.

Ibrahimovic is twice the age of these players, but still going at the age of 41, even if he is out this evening due to an injury sustained on international duty.

“Zlatan is a great champion, he has this mental strength and character that are unmatched,” said Berlusconi.

“I know he still really wants to play and only he can decide how long that can go on for. As for the future, I am sure he’ll continue to have important roles in the world of football. He has the necessary intelligence and charisma to do whatever he wants.

“Ibrahimovic’s know-how will be precious as a coach or director.”

Another legend from the Berlusconi era is currently the Milan director, with Paolo Maldini going from defence to transfer strategy.

“Paolo was a guide for Milan on the field and now does the same behind a desk. He has the same charisma, style, clear mind and competence.”
