Former captain Giuseppe Bergomi has claimed Inter suffered a ‘mental decline’ and felt the team ‘weakened’ after the January transfers.

The Nerazzurri started the season in an excellent manner, keeping up with Juventus and pushing the reigning champions throughout the first half of the season.

But their form has dipped after the winter break and Inter are currently eight points behind a surprising Lazio at second, with one game in hand.

The Nerazzurri started the season in an excellent manner, keeping up with Juventus and pushing the reigning champions throughout the first half of the season.

But their form has dipped after the winter break and Inter are currently eight points behind a surprising Lazio at second, with one game in hand.

Antonio Conte decided to bring in Ashley Young, Victor Moses and Christian Eriksen this winter but Bergomi is not convinced it was such a good idea.

“I think the decline was more mental than physical,” Bergomi told Sky Sport Italia, trying to explain why the Nerazzurri have lost ground on their rivals. “I think the team has weakened, especially after the January market.”

When the season came to a halt, Inter were still fighting on three fronts, but were down 1-0 after the first leg against Napoli in the Coppa Italia and prepared to face Getafe in the last 16 of the Europa League.
