Inter and Italy legend Beppe Bergomi is unsure about Mateo Retegui and insists West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca is a better fit for the Azzurri.

Retegui, 23, scored two goals in his first two appearances with the Azzurri. Despite being born in Argentina, the 23-year-old is eligible to play for La Nazionale given that his grandfather was Italian and moved to Argentina from Sicily.

Retegui started against England and Malta, finding the net in both matches, but Bergomi is still unsure about his impact.

“He scored a goal [against Malta] and this is good,” the 1982 World Cup winner told Sky Sport Italia.

“However, considering his performance, I have to suspend the judgment. I believe Scamacca moves differently and in a better way.”

The former Sassuolo forward was introduced as a substitute both against England and Malta.

He has racked up 11 appearances with La Nazionale but still hasn’t scored his first goal with his national team.

The 24-year-old joined West Ham from Sassuolo in a €36m deal in the summer of 2022 and has netted eight goals in 27 appearances with the Hammers this term.
