Beppe Bergomi is surprised by Inter‘s results without Romelu Lukaku: ‘I thought he was essential, Simone Inzaghi told me that he tried everything to convince him to stay.’

The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in the last seven games and sit two points off leaders Napoli.

“Inter are playing well regardless of who goes on the pitch, I’ve never had doubts about Simone Inzaghi,” Inter legend Beppe Bergomi told Sky Sport Italia, as quoted by Inter-news.it.

“However, I have doubts about Romelu Lukaku [sale], because I thought he was an essential player for Inter.

“I spoke to Inzaghi, he told me that he had tried everything to convince him to stay, but then he understood that it was impossible.”

Lukaku pushed to join Chelsea after a two-year spell at Inter and returned to Stamford Bridge in a €115m move.

“Inzaghi knew Lukaku’s potential, he knew he was a key player in Serie A,” Bergomi continued. “However, Inter signed Edin Dzeko, while Hakan Calhanoglu has made a step forward in terms of mentality over the last month.

“Inter had to change their playing style, but they play well and attack with many men.”

Dzeko is Inter’s best scorer this season, with ten goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.

Inter have the best-attacking record in Serie A with 36 goals scored in 15 games, Milan follow them with 33, while Atalanta and Napoli have 32 each.

Lukaku spent over a month on the sidelines with an ankle injury and has scored four goals in 13 games with Chelsea.

Inter beat Spezia at San Siro on Wednesday and meet José Mourinho’s Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.
