Inter legend Beppe Bergomi insists the Nerazzurri need a better attitude, even if more problems emerged in the derby against Milan: ‘The defence is old and slow.’

The Nerazzurri suffered a 2-1 loss against city rivals Milan on Sunday, ending their six-game winning streak against the Rossoneri.

Simone Inzaghi’s men impressed midweek against Manchester City, but the 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League may have affected the Nerazzurri.

“They had the wrong approach because they had to expect a strong start from Milan. They’ve started strong in every game,” former Inter defender Bergomi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Inter are the oldest team in the league. They struggled in midfield, and Milan’s strikers’ pace really caused trouble for them. Physically, I didn’t see Inter well. I think they are struggling to play two consecutive high-level games, mentally and physically.

“They played well against Manchester City, but the match was mentally demanding, and they were exhausted in the second half.

“Since last season, I’ve thought that they are not the best team, but they have the best attitude. They wanted to win that title at all costs,” continued Bergomi.

“Even against Genoa in Round 1, they lacked attention. Against Milan, they had to realise Milan was in better shape. They have time, but they need the proper attitude. Without that, it becomes hard.

“Without certain players who are strong in one-on-one, they have problems when they must dominate proceedings. They were so good with preventive marking last season, but did you see against Milan? When the others accelerate, their defence is old and slow.”

Inter currently sit 6th in the Serie A table, level on eight points with their city rivals and three below leaders Torino. The Nerazzurri scored ten goals in five matches but already conceded five times.

The defending Serie A champions have collected two wins, two draws and one win so far this season.

Their next match is away at Udinese on Saturday, September 28.
