Inter legend Beppe Bergomi backs the sale of Mateo Kovacic to Real Madrid, and says the Nerazzurri must target the Scudetto.

The Croatian playmaker is set to join Los Merengues in a €35m deal, with only official confirmation of the transfer still to come.

“It’s not an easy question to answer,” Bergomi told FCInterNews when asked whether the deal was a good one.

“From a purely financial standpoint, Inter have done an important deal. The fee is absolutely important.

“I don’t think the Croatian has ever managed to express himself at 100 per cent, he’s never found his ideal role both with [Andrea] Stramaccioni and [Walter] Mazzarri before, and with [Roberto] Mancini now.

“I think selling him is the right choice.”

The Beneamata have struggled in pre-season, but Bergomi, who represented the club over 750 times, believes they will still be title contenders.

“The results over the summer don’t mean much. I think Inter have a great opportunity in the League.

“The fixtures have been kind, the first three home games – Milan aside – [Inter will face Atalanta and Verona] give the Nerazzurri a chance to put together a run of good results.

“That would build confidence, and exploit the weakness of others. For example, I think Juventus have been weakened by the depatures of [Andrea] Pirlo, [Carlos] Tevez and [Arturo] Vidal.

“Mancini has always aimed for the best, so I’d say [they should aim for] the Scudetto. Inter have to think big, even if I say that if they don’t get into the Champions League it would be a very disappointing season.”
