“With Antonio Conte, you can’t really get away from the 3-5-2 formation, and if the club wants to invest in order to make them competitive in Europe, I think there are three roles that need adjusting,” former defender Bergomi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Perhaps it’s better to talk about the type of players they need. For example, a quick defender who would allow them to push the team further forward and run a few more risks, without being forced to defend so deep.
“They also need a left-footed player on the left wing. Ivan Perisic did well, Ashley Young is more or less reliable, but they need more quality there.
“And finally, a midfielder with six to eight goals per season. In my day, that role was Lothar Matthaus, whereas today it’d be someone like Goretzka.
“I think Inter should focus on Goretzka more than Kante, it’s no longer necessary to look at players like him. I consider Marcelo Brozovic and Nicolò Barella to be perfect, so there’s just a third name that might require an investment.
“I realise Christian Eriksen is there, but in order to make the step up in Europe, you need something else in that area.”
