Bergomi: ‘Conte ideal for Inter, Inzaghi told me one thing about Lukaku…’

Inter legend Beppe Bergomi would bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club and reveals what Simone Inzaghi told him about the Chelsea star.

The 1982 Italy World Cup winner discussed Inter’s situation in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. The Nerazzurri sit third in the table, six points behind leaders Milan. The Serie A defending champions have a game in hand but will travel to Turin on Sunday to face Juventus.

Although many didn’t expect them to be title contenders in the summer, Inzaghi’s men had collected several wins in a row at the end of 2021, but have somehow collapsed since the start of the new year.

“The team always reflects the coach, in a good or bad way. Simone has a different approach to footballers, he is more open to dialogue,” Bergomi said.

“He has his personality but, like Trap [Giovanni Trapattoni] used to say, you enter a centrifuge when things don’t go well at Inter. Some more experience is needed.

“Inter have always won with charismatic coaches: Bersellini, Trap, Mancini, Mourinho and Conte. Inzaghi has character, but he expresses it in a different way. I can say that he’s never thought about changing tactics, even when Marcelo Brozovic was injured.

“Last season, Conte decided to sit deeper at some point, managing to win games.”

Inzaghi coached Romelu Lukaku for more than a week during the pre-season and before the striker insisted on leaving the club to return to Chelsea. In December, the striker apologised to Inter fans for the way he had left and said he hoped to return one day.

“Lukaku was the best one in Italy, I still think that Inter would be another team with him,” noted Bergomi.

“With all the respect for Edin Dzeko and the others, Lukaku had a different impact in terms of power, pace and leadership. He had Inter in his hands. If there were the conditions, I would bring him back to Inter.

“Inzaghi confessed to me that he’s never coached such a strong striker despite working with him for just ten days.”
