Italy and Inter legend Beppe Bergomi says he’d ‘run a risk’ and confirm Nicolò Barella in the Azzurri squad for Euro 2024 even if he may miss the opening match.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said on Friday that Italy were a little concerned about Barella’s fitness ahead of Euro 2024.

The Inter star is dealing with a muscle problem which forced him to the sidelines in a friendly game against Turkey on Tuesday.

“It’s tough to replace him even if Italy have the best midfield players,” Bergomi told Sky Sport on Friday.

“Barella has a strong personality and has improved his attitude in the last year. He was also the captain in some games. He is a reference point for everyone. I don’t know exactly which sort of injury he has, but if the lad can make it for the second game, I’d run a risk even if he’s not 100% fit. He is fundamental to our system.”
