Local authorities in Bergamo are worried about Manchester United fans coming in for the Champions League game with Atalanta, so ban the sale of alcohol.

The supporters will fly in from England for Tuesday’s big game at the Gewiss Stadium, after La Dea lost 3-2 at Old Trafford.

As is often the case in Italy when the local authorities fear potential crowd trouble, certain measures will be taken to lessen the risk of both public order problems and danger to the historic buildings in the city.

The sale of alcohol above 5 per cent will be banned from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning in bars, restaurants and shops in the historic centre of Bergamo Alta and around the Gewiss Stadium.

The sale of all drinks in glass bottles will also be banned, even non-alcoholic ones.

It is only this season that Bergamo has had to welcome fans for Champions League matches, as in the first campaign they played at San Siro in nearby Milan, while last term the pandemic forced them to play behind closed doors.

  1. This really shows how English fans are thought about in Italy. They need to be treated like toddlers and given every chance to succeed.

  2. Useless measure. What do chavs drink? Beer! How much alcohol does beer have? 5%. So it doesn’t change a thing for them. They’ll drink just as much as always.

  3. DB Milan, as opposed to Roma fans who come to England and nearly killed a Liverpool fan a couple of years ago? Or Italian fans in general stabbing foreign fans over many years?

English fans are very tame compared to most in Europe yet for some reason we still carry a reputation we don’t deserve. We like a drink yes but rarely any trouble and no ultras.
