Berardi and Pinamonti out, Chiellini quits Italy after Argentina

Domenico Berardi and Andrea Pinamonti have left the Italy squad for the Finalissima with Argentina and Nations League games due to injury, while Roberto Mancini confirms that will be Giorgio Chiellini’s final cap.

The Sassuolo right-sided attacking winger and Empoli centre-forward, on loan from Inter, have pulled out of the upcoming four matches.

It is particularly disappointing for Pinamonti, as this would’ve been his first call-up to the senior Italy squad.

Federico Chiesa, Ciro Immobile, Gaetano Castrovilli and Rafael Toloi were already unavailable.

Instead, Mancini has called up Federico Gatti of Frosinone, on loan from Juventus, FC Zurich’s Inter product Wilfried Gnonto, Frosinone’s Alessio Zerbin, Salvatore Esposito of SPAL, Samuele Ricci from Torino and Verona’s Matteo Cancellieri.

While the new faces come through, others bow out, as Mancini confirmed the Finalissima with Argentina at Wembley Stadium on June 1 will be the final cap for Chiellini.

“I won’t try to convince him otherwise, Chiellini has made his decision. I will thank him again for all that he has done, but it’s only right he follow his own path,” said the coach in a press conference.

Chiellini has left Juventus and is expected to sign for MLS club LAFC.

Italy will face Argentina on June 1 for the Finalissima between European and South American Champions, then the Nations League begins.

They host Germany on June 4 and Hungary on June 7, visit England on June 11 and Germany on June 14.
