Domenico Berardi was happy with his first brace for Italy when beating Malta 4-0 and can’t wait to be back at Wembley against England. ‘We have wonderful memories of that stadium.’

The Nazionale were unrecognisable with many changes to the side forced by injuries and the betting scandal, but still managed to comfortably get the better of Malta at the Stadio San Nicola in Bari.

Jack Bonaventura opened the scoring with his first ever goal for his country, ending a three-year absence from the Azzurri, before a Berardi brace and Davide Frattesi stoppage-time solo effort.

“It is pleasing, I am happy with the two goals, but even happier with the performance. It has been a hard week of work with the coach and we are really pleased,” Berardi told RAI Sport.

Now they are preparing for Tuesday’s crucial qualifier away to England at Wembley Stadium, where Berardi and his teammates won the EURO 2020 Final.

“We have wonderful memories of that stadium, we will go there and try to do what we did today, play our game and win.”

  1. unrecognizable? Barella, Loctelli, Bastoni, Dimarco, Raspadori, Darmian, Berardi… all regulars over the past 2 to 4 years…

  2. OMG, Enrico! That’s all you talk about… balotelli, balotelli, balotelli… there’s a better chance you and I will crack the lineup. Dude, he’s done.
