Under new Coach Roberto De Zerbi though he appears to be getting back to his best, and the Italian international spoke about his past, present and future with Sky Italia.

“If, when I scored my first Serie B goal against Crotone, they’d told me that by the age of 24 I’d have almost 70 goals, 50 of them in Serie A, I wouldn’t have believed it,” Berardi said.

“I remember my first, it was a penalty against Parma. The most beautiful was the last one against Frosinone, because it came after a long dry spell and was also my 50th.

“The most important goal of my career was against Chievo the first year we stayed up. In the same year there was the unforgettable win over Milan, with the double in the 94th minute.

“It was a beautiful evening for me, in which I realised I could become an important player.

“This season we could have three or four more points. First of all we’re aiming to stay up, then we’ll try to put the Europa League in our sights.

“We’re a team with talent, but due to our young age we sometimes pay for a lack of malice and a bit of inexperience. 2019 must be the year of consecration for me.”
