Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer is expected to be named in the matchday squad for the first time in the 2023-24 season, following an injury layoff of over six months.

The Algeria international has not stepped out onto the pitch since the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against rivals Inter back in April.

Just 18 minutes into the European edition of the Derby della Madonnina, Bennacer went down clutching his knee and had to be replaced by Junior Mesias.

In the days following, Milan confirmed that Bennacer had sustained a serious knee injury which required surgery, and which would keep him out of action for an expected period of six months.

Though closer to seven months in the end, Bennacer has been out on the pitch training in full with the rest of the Rossoneri squad over the course of the last week as he completed the final stages of his rehabilitation process.

In light of Milan’s recent injury woes, Bennacer’s return comes as a positive as he is expected to provide a much-needed boat in the midfield department.

According to updates from Gianluca Di Marzio on Friday afternoon, Bennacer will be part of the squad for the Frosinone game on Saturday evening, but it has not been confirmed how much of a role or how many minutes he will be handed at San Siro.
