Ismael Bennacer admits Milan ‘heads dropped’ after the second Chelsea goal and they did not have the ‘right spirit and hunger’ in their Champions League defeat.

The Rossoneri sorely missed the 12 players who were out through injury and squad restrictions, including their goalkeeper, both full-backs and several second-choice figures too.

Nonetheless, they were toothless at Stamford Bridge, having more possession and only one real scoring opportunity that Charles De Ketelaere and Rade Krunic failed to take.

“It really hurts to lose like this, as we didn’t have the right spirit and hunger,” Bennacer told Amazon Prime Italia when wearing the captain’s armband.

“We know the Champions League is another level and we have to give more. We need to learn from this, work on what we didn’t do well and lift our heads.”

Considering how Milan fought back in Serie A at the weekend from a last-gasp Empoli equaliser to still win 3-1 in stoppages, what caused such a lack of confidence in London?

“We always try to give everything, games like this are all about the details. Once we conceded the second goal, it was tough and our heads dropped. We need to do better and have more belief.

“We will watch the game back and see what went wrong.”

  1. Ridiculous comment, it wasn’t his fault the whole team turned into children after failing to stop Thiago Silva from 3 corners. He should never have been marking their best header of the ball.
