Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has sent his condolences to the family of Ciro Esposito – the fan who sadly passed away this morning.

The 31-year-old was the victim of a gunshot before the Partenopei’s Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina in Rome.

The supporter spent 50 days in intensive care, but his family confirmed that after several operations, Ciro sadly died in hospital.

And the Coach has taken to his official website to share his grief.

“I’ve been all my life in football because football is my life,” the statement read. “As a player and then as a Coach, and I have enjoyed much of what has come from being in the game.

“But situations like this force me to rethink many things. Where is football and society heading? Towards what limits are we taking it?

“The death of Ciro Esposito is something dramatic, unjustifiable, terrible. A young like cannot be lost when heading to a football game to watch their team.

“It makes no sense. This cannot happen ever again – ever.

“We must provide the means to eradicate tragic events like this that surround football and around sport in general.

“I want to send from here all my respect, solidarity and all my love to the family and friends of Ciro Esposito. My condolences, rest in peace.”
