Rafa Benitez “had faith Napoli could do it” after a topsy-turvy Coppa Italia tie with Udinese was decided on penalties.

The Friulani played with 10 men from the 68th minute onwards, but still forced extra time and a shoot-out following a 2-2 draw after Dries Mertens hit an early spot-kick on to the bar.

“Missing a penalty so early gave confidence to the other team. When we went 2-1 up it seemed over, but Udinese scored again and we need to defend better in these situations,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“I had faith we could do it, as the team was in control. We were missing the final ball and Udinese were only occasionally dangerous.”

Napoli received two penalties, one much clearer than the other, but Benitez shrugged off any questions about the officiating.

“I don’t talk about referees. I usually don’t and I want to continue like that. I only spoke once in a year and a half, there are many Coaches who talk about referees every day. I think once… it can happen.”

Marek Hamsik had put Napoli 2-1 up in extra time with a scorching strike.

“He had some good performances recently and this goal will really boost his confidence. We know he can make the difference and is hugely talented, so I hope the goal increases his self-belief.

“It’s important for us to have a large squad that can play in all competitions and this win will help them going forward too.”

Napoli will face Inter in the quarter-final on February 4, as the holders continue the defence of their trophy.

The Stadio San Paolo was mostly empty and Benitez was asked whether the Coppa Italia should change format so smaller clubs play on home turf.

“When I play the FA Cup in England, it’s a one-off game and the stadium is always full. That trophy is seen as almost on the same level as the League title.”

Benitez was asked about his future and whether he had any other plans in the pipeline with his contract set to expire in June.

“I have been clear, I’ll talk to the President in two or three months. I am happy here, want to get the best out of every game and have absolutely no other side lined up in future, no matter what the rumours say.”
