Referee Srdjan Jovanovic took several minutes to confirm Moise Kean’s goal in Benfica-Juventus due to the lack of goal-line technology and a potential off-side.

There were confusing scenes at the Estadio da Luz when Juventus forward Kean levelled the score against Benfica from a corner kick action. The Italian striker kicked the ball inside an empty net after a double save from Odysseas Vlachodīmos.

He was flagged off-side, so Juventus’ goal was initially disallowed. It took a few minutes to change the decision and confirm the goal following a VAR check. It was initially given to Dusan Vlahovic.

Initially, it seemed that the referee was checking whether Kean had touched the ball before it crossed the line, given that the goal-line technology was unavailable due to technical issues, as revealed by UEFA in the morning.

Therefore, the whole action was checked by VAR, taking several minutes for the final response.

Juventus did level the score, but Benfica netted twice in the following 15 minutes, going up 3-1. Juventus must win tonight to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Kean was eventually given the goal, meaning that he was not offside.
