A group of Benevento ultras reportedly attacked the team’s bus on the motorway as the squad and staff headed back down south following their loss to Cittadella.

Calciomercato.com details how the Campania outfit suffered a painful 3-1 loss to Cittadella on Saturday afternoon, a defeat that essentially condemns them to relegation. Benevento sit rock bottom of the Serie B table with 32 points and now have only a slim chance of avoiding the drop to Serie C.

As Benevento travelled back home following their defeat, they were intercepted on the Bologna-Florence motorway by a group of the club’s ultras, who were travelling in nine-seater vans. They first followed the team bus before attacking it with metal rods and other blunt objects, shattering the outside windows. Considering the dangers, it was lucky the incident didn’t become more serious.

Once the assault was over, the police intervened, interviewing the Benevento staff and players before organising their return to the Campania city under escort to avoid any further incidents.

This is not the only case of violence against Benevento this season. Last month, left back Roko Jureskin was attacked by a group of ultras whilst in his car, being punched and verbally abused.
