Benevento are on the verge of relegation to Serie C and the team bus was attacked by its own fans in an extraordinary high-speed chase involving several vehicles on the motorway.
The club had been in Serie A as recently as 2020-21, but were relegated at the end of the season and were in the promotion play-offs last term.
It all went very wrong this year and they are rock bottom of the Serie B table, practically guaranteed a drop down to Serie C.
There has been growing tension with the fans, but nobody could’ve expected the scenes that followed their defeat to Cittadella.
According to Sky Sport Italia, the team bus was driving back along the Bologna-Firenze motorway when it was flanked by several minibuses carrying their own ultras.
Driving at high speed, the people in the minibuses threw objects at the team coach, with some even leaning out to smash the windows with metal bars.
Fortunately, the double glazing on the bus windows managed to prevent internal damage.
Police were called and had to give the Benevento squad an escort back to their base.
