Pippo Inzaghi’s Benevento are the first team promoted to Serie A for the 2020-21 season, matching a record set by Ascoli in 1977-78 by doing so with seven games to spare.
Le Streghe – The Witches – have dominated the Serie B tournament from start to finish and secured their spot with a 24-point lead from the chasing pack.
They have won 23 games, drawn seven and lost only one, scoring 56 goals and conceding just 15 in 31 rounds.

The last club to book promotion with seven rounds to go was Ascoli in 1977-78, although the league had two points for a win at the time rather than three.
This will be their second Serie A campaign after the 2017-18 season, but they’ve only ever had three Serie B experiences, spending most of their history in the lower divisions.
Benevento hosted Juve Stabia this evening at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito, but had to play behind closed doors due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.
The local Mayor made an appeal before the game to keep celebrations to a minimum and maintain social distancing.
The game didn’t entirely go to plan, seeing as Luca Caldirola was sent off for dissent before the half-hour mark, but substitute Marco Sau still gave them the lead by dribbling past defenders to beat the on-rushing goalkeeper.
To make it even more emphatic, Crotone and Spezia also slipped up.
Benevento can do even more celebrating tomorrow, as Loic Remy landed in Italy this evening and will have his medical with the club tomorrow morning.
The 33-year-old striker is a free agent after his contract with Lille ran down and is set to sign a three-year deal.
