Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia has described his ‘joy’ at being able to return to Roma for tomorrow’s Champions League clash.

The 27-year-old became embroiled in a public spat with Giallorosso management following his €26m switch to the German champions in August.

However, the Morocco international is excited about the prospect of reacquainting himself with some of his former teammates and stepping back out on to the Olimpico tomorrow evening when Bayern visit in the Champions League.

“Returning makes me happy, because it will be an opportunity for me to see all my friends [from Roma] again,” Benatia has told bundesliga.de today.

“I still have a lot of them, like Miralem Pjanic, Daniele De Rossi, Francesco Totti, and so on.

“Roma fans will probably welcome me with whistles, but this does not bother me. I know that I have always given my best for Roma.

“For me, personally, it is a special match for sure. I'll be back at the Olimpico with joy, because the fans always offer great support and you feel attached to them.”
