Inter and Italy defender Alessandro Bastoni reveals the players who most inspired him, why he won’t take Nicolò Barella or Marcelo Brozovic out to dinner, and the surprising toughest striker he’s ever marked.

The former Atalanta and Parma centre-back spoke to comedy group Gli Autogol on their Twitch channel and spilled the beans on his career.

“Other than the obvious Marco Materazzi and Walter Samuel, the defender I take the most inspiration from is Sergio Ramos. I was able to talk to him after Inter played Real Madrid and he sent me his jersey for my birthday. I love his attitude on and off the field.”

Bastoni thanked former Inter coach Antonio Conte, because “I wouldn’t be here without the lessons he taught me,” but gave an amusing answer when asked which of his Inter teammates he’d take out to dinner.

“I won’t go with Barella, because he’d order wine worth €1,800 or something, so he can just stay in the room. Brozo is hard work to take out to dinner, more than anything hard work getting him home. So I’ll offer dinner to Milan Skriniar as thanks for all the effort he puts in defence.”

When it comes to the toughest striker he has marked in Serie A, Bastoni surprisingly did not choose your classic Cristiano Ronaldo or Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“It’s not a walk in the park against either of them, but Gonzalo Higuain at Juventus is the one who caused me the most problems.”
