Barone: ‘Super aggressive Fiorentina in Conference League’

Fiorentina director general Joe Barone wants the team to be ‘super, super aggressive’ in the Conference League Final against West Ham United, but can’t bring himself to even look at the trophy.

It kicks off at the Eden Arena in Prague at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

Both these clubs have only won one European trophy, the Cup Winners’ Cup, the Viola doing so in 1961 and the Hammers five years later.

“I don’t even want to look at the trophy, I want to wait until the end of the match to embrace it,” Barone told Sky Sport Italia while standing next to the Conference League.

This is the second Final of the season for Fiorentina, who had taken an early lead against Inter in the Coppa Italia on May 24 only to eventually lose 2-1.

It is their first European Final since losing the UEFA Cup over two legs to Juventus in 1990.

“We feel immense pride from the whole staff, the coach and the lads for the work that has been done during the year. Playing a Final in Europe makes the city and the Viola fans proud. Our youth team is also in the Primavera Scudetto Final.”

Coach Vincenzo Italiano has been linked with the Napoli job, largely thanks to the way he has taken an all-attacking approach to the Fiorentina squad and their 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation.

“Italiano works so hard, he transmits his ideas to the players, their way of pressing, of winning back the ball in the opposition half and attacking at all times, creating lots of scoring opportunities.

“We need to be very intelligent and wary of the transitions, be super, super aggressive. It’s going to be a very hard-fought match.”

Luka Jovic has not quite lived up to expectations, first at Real Madrid and then in Florence, but he starts upfront rather than Arthur Cabral.

“Jovic is a player of a very high level and I am convinced he can make the difference for our team this evening.”
