Milan legend Franco Baresi warns that Tottenham boss Antonio Conte knows ‘Serie A and Italian football well’ but is convinced the Rossoneri will be up to the task in the Champions League Round of 16.

The defending Serie A champions have been drawn with Spurs in the Champions League Round of 16.

“We’ll prepare at our best, our target was to qualify for the Round of 16 and we are ready to surprise again,” Baresi, Milan’s honorary vice president told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think the team is ready to go far. Tottenham are a strong team, Conte knows Italian football and Serie A well. We must be ambitious and think big, we must be optimistic.”

Conte signed an 18-month deal at Tottenham in November 2021, leading the team to a top-four finish. The North Londoners won their group ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt.

“Conte is focused on everything but I am convinced Milan will be up to the task,” insisted Baresi.

“We’ll play in February so it is important to see how we feel. I think we are mature for these games. Last season’s experience was useful and made us understand what it means to play in the Champions League. We are convinced we can play on par with everyone.”

Does he expect anyone, in particular, to step up for Milan and make a difference in the knock-out phase?

“Milan have already raised the bar, we are doing incredible performances,” said Baresi.

“Every player is improving. We have very strong midfield, fearless defenders and we always create something up front thanks to the coach who offers attacking football. We have created enthusiasm and I am sure San Siro will help us. We’ll be ready.”

UEFA will confirm the dates and times for the two matches between Milan and Tottenham later today.

The Rossoneri faced Chelsea in the Champions League group but lost both fixtures in London and at San Siro.

They are currently second in the Serie A table, six points behind leaders Napoli.
