Former Milan captain Franco Baresi has praised the Rossoneri’s “great and innovative project” to construct a new stadium. 

Milan got the go-ahead to build their new home on Tuesday and they hope to have the construction complete for the 2018-19 season.

Baresi acknowledged an emotional attachment to San Siro, but praised the club for securing a brighter future by owning their own stadium.

Baresi acknowledged an emotional attachment to San Siro, but praised the club for securing a brighter future by owning their own stadium.

“We must look to the future, and the future says that the ownership of stadiums is what will keep football clubs on their feet,”Baresi said to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The Rossoneri’s project is great and innovative. I think that the club has done well to hold on until the end and beat off the competition.

“Of course, there will be a bit of sadness at the thought of leaving San Siro, but you must know how to adapt to compete at the top level.”
