Nicolò Barella admits ‘2021 is not a year I will forget in a hurry’ after winning the Scudetto with Inter and UEFA EURO 2020 for Italy, as he looks back over his most exciting Champions League moment so far.

The Nerazzurri begin their European campaign tomorrow against Real Madrid at San Siro, which will be sold out, albeit only at 50 per cent capacity due to COVID restrictions.

Ahead of the game, EURO 2020 winner Barella looked back over some of his previous games in the Champions League, including his first goal during a 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague.

“I felt such strong emotions at San Siro, hearing the whole stadium celebrating for my goal was an incredible moment that still gives me goosebumps to this day,” Barella said in the Matchday Programme.

“It was like being injected with pure adrenaline at that moment.”

The midfielder was on target again for Italy in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Belgium.

“I was coming off a bad performance and that goal was important for the team. It took us towards the semi-final and one of the great sensations in a fantastic journey.

“It has to be said, 2021 is not a year I will forget in a hurry. Winning the Scudetto and the European Championship was so exciting, difficult and enjoyable at the same time.”

Barella has a special rapport with Inter teammate Marcelo Brozovic, played out often on social media with the pair chasing each other around with anything from water pistols to cars.

“He’s a really genuine person. We understand each other on the pitch too and always try to help each other out.”
