Nicolò Barella admits Inter ‘made mistakes’ in the Champions League last season, but aim to make up for it against Real Madrid tonight.

It kicks off at San Siro at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

It has been an amazing 2021 for Barella, who won the Serie A title for Inter and lifted the UEFA EURO 2020 trophy with Italy, but now his focus is on this competition.

“I am looking to reach the Champions League knockout phase for the first time,” the midfielder told Amazon Prime Italia.

“We’ll give it our all to go through. We were unfortunate last season and made a few too many mistakes, but will try to do better this time.”

Barella has been tipped as the future captain of Inter, though he is in no rush.

“Samir Handanovic is the captain, he is our leader in the locker room, so this is really not an issue for me. I am happy that the club and my teammates have faith in me, I try to help any way that I can.”

It is going to be a tough challenge this evening against Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded Real Madrid.

“They have some excellent players, but we will try to play our game.”
