Former Juventus midfielder Miralem Pjanic has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of his new career experience with Barcelona.

A statement from the Catalan club confirmed Pjanic had tested positive after feeling some symptoms on Saturday August 22.

The player will therefore remain isolated at home for 15 days and won’t be able to begin pre-season training with the Blaugrana.

It’s a blow for Pjanic, who was set to fly out next week.

He was on vacation in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, which has become a new hotbed of Coronavirus cases in Italy because it is such a popular holiday destination, particularly among football players.

The 30-year-old Bosnia international completed the transfer for €60m as part of an exchange deal with Arthur Melo.

“Miralem Pjanic has tested positive in a PCR taken on Saturday 22 August after feeling a little unwell. The player is in good health and is self-isolating at home,” read a statement.

“The player will therefore not be travelling to Barcelona for 15 days, when he will be expected to report for duty with the FC Barcelona team.”
