Talks had dragged on throughout the summer, even beyond the point where the €111m release clause had expired.
The club had seemingly given up for this season, with the pandemic affecting their finances and the focus seemingly moving onto more defensive targets after an 8-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
However, it’s now claimed that new coach Koeman has requested Lautaro Martinez as one of the signings to bolster his squad.
The forward, who turned 23 on Saturday, helped Inter reach the Europa League Final and second place in Serie A with 21 goals and seven assists in 49 competitive games.
The main problem remains, which is that Barcelona don’t want to pay the €100m asking price, Marca suggesting they instead want to get it closer to €70m.
Considering Lionel Messi’s irritation at the direction his team is taking, and Inter’s undisguised interest in his next move, a potential exchange would be part of the conversation.
