Barcelona and Boca Juniors will play a Maradona Cup friendly match in Saudi Arabia on December 14 to honour Diego Armando Maradona a year on from his death.

The Napoli and Argentina legend passed away on November 25 at the age of 60.

El Pibe de Oro really began his career at Boca Juniors, moving to Barcelona in 1982.

He was there for two seasons before the switch to Napoli in 1984, remaining until 1991.

There was a return to Boca at the end of his playing career until retirement in 1997.

This friendly match for the newly-instituted Maradona Cup will be played at Mrsool Park in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh in front of 25,000 spectators.

Napoli is the club where Maradona spent the vast majority of his playing career, making 257 competitive appearances with 115 goals and 33 assists.

In comparison, he represented Barcelona on just 49 occasions.

Just days following his death, the Stadio San Paolo in Naples was formally renamed the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

  1. Nick

49 caps throughout his checkered tenure (hepatitis, broken ankle, etc) for the Blaugrana and they get a tribute like this for D1OS?

25,000 people….disgraceful! A 99k capacity Camp Nou or 55k Bombonera would be more fitting for the occasion of this legendary and iconic player.

SA will ensure that the right bank accounts are fattened.

  2. MARCO

The only silverware Barca will get this season

  3. InterFan75

Better would be Napoli – Boca Juniors at Camp Nou stadium. 😛
Maradona is reason why I follow football and why I’m Argentina fan and why Napoli is my second favorite team

  4. Dom

The winner of this game should have the opportunity to play Napoli in Naples in the Stadio Maradona to compete for the Maradona Super Cup 🙂

  5. Mal ditesta

Napoli vs Argentina would be the most appropriate.
