Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini confirms “Roma are very close” to signing Federico Balzaretti. “He would have problems at Napoli.”

The Italian international left-back is expected to leave Sicily this summer, though the Giallorossi have now overtaken Napoli in the race.

“The situation is still in stasis. I spoke to the player and he is a little embarrassed at all the attention,” Zamparini told Radio Radio.

“I made him an important proposal for a three-year contract at the highest wages Palermo can offer. Now we have to wait for him to decide.

“What are the chances? In my view it’s 45 per cent Palermo, 45 per cent Roma and only 10 per cent Napoli. If it were up to me, it’d be 90 per cent staying with us.”

Over the last few days it became clear that Balzaretti had a personal preference for the Olimpico side.

“I spoke to him and I know that he’d have problems at Napoli,” continued Zamparini.

“I think in a few days he will give his response. I have to find a replacement, as if I don’t then he will not be released.

“Roma are very close. Walter Sabatini worked very hard, while he was the one who brought Balzaretti to Palermo in the first place and has always admired the player. He knows him well.”
