Balzaretti unsure of future

Italy left-back Federico Balzaretti has admitted that he doesn’t know if he will remain at Palermo for next season.

The Italian has been linked with a switch to French side Paris Saint-Germain since before the January transfer window, when his agent first suggested the move was likely, whilst reports are now suggesting other Serie A sides are also tracking him.

Whilst Palermo have more recently expressed a desire to keep hold of Balzaretti, the full-back has today hinted that he could leave.

“I spoke with [President Maurizio] Zamparini in May, we are in contact and we’re talking with my agent,” explained the defender to Corriere dello Sport, from Italy’s Euro 2012 training camp in Krakow.

“I’m currently focused on the European Championships. The certainty of staying 100 per cent at Palermo is not there. We are seeing offers arrive.

“What we have spoken about is between us, but it does not mean that Zamparini wants to keep me.

“All clubs are welcome, but between Palermo and Lazio [who are also linked with the player] the priority is Palermo. I have a contract for another year still, that is indisputable.”

Balzaretti turned his attention to the Euros and reflected on the chances of Emanuele Giaccherini starting ahead of him, should Cesare Prandelli opt to change formation against Spain.

“His features and mine are not similar, he is a more attacking player, I am more defensive, but we are both good on the counter-attack, we run and are strong.

“It is not important who plays between us. I would happily win the Euros without playing a single minute. We must put aside any egos.”
