Balotelli reacts to racist abuse

Brescia striker Mario Balotelli threatened to walk off the field after receiving racist abuse from Hellas Verona fans this afternoon.

The Italy international was justifiably infuriated by the behaviour of the ultras at the Stadio Bentegodi.

During the second half, he kicked the ball into the stands and started to storm off in a rage.

His teammates and opponents tried to calm him down, while the referee followed protocol by stopping play for several minutes.

During this stoppage, a statement was read out over the speaker warning that any further racist chanting would result in the game being suspended for a longer period.

This is the second time this weekend that the new protocol has been adopted in Serie A, having been codified only a couple of weeks ago.

On Saturday, the referee halted play during Roma 2-1 Napoli after the Giallorossi supporters made chants of ‘territorial discrimination’ towards the Neapolitans.

Edin Dzeko asked his fans to drown out the bigots and cheer on only for their team, not insult the opposition.
