Italy already have attacking concerns as Inter ace Giampaolo Pazzini is struggling with an ankle problem and Giuseppe Rossi suffered a knee issue on Tuesday.

Balotelli was set to start alongside Antonio Cassano in attack on Friday against Serbia given that Pazzini and Rossi are only expected to be fit in time for the Northern Ireland game on Tuesday.

The tactician's only other attacking option in the squad right now is Parma youngster Sebastian Giovinco.

Italy have already qualified for Euro 2012.
