Gazzetta dello Sport insists negotiations are going well for the player, who does not now appear needed by Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge.

The Rossoneri want to take the Frenchman on an initial year-long loan before potentially making the deal permanent next summer.

It is thought the 23-year-old is extremely keen to make the switch to San Siro, with positive talks held yesterday between Diavolo general manager Leonardo and the player’s brother, also his agent.

However, the Italian daily claims there are still issues to be ironed out with Bakayoko’s current employers before the deal can be completed.

Milan cannot afford to pay all of the midfielder’s €6m-a-season wages he currently earns in London.

They will reportedly need Chelsea to continue to pay a percentage of this, at least during the coming season’s proposed loan deal.

The second potential snag is the fee the Rossoneri would have to pay to make the transfer permanent next summer.

Given that the Blues spent €45m just last summer on signing Bakayoko from Monaco, they do not want to make any more than a €10m loss on the player.

It is unclear yet how much Milan are prepared to pay, but Gazzetta is confident that negotiations are running smoothly on the whole and that a deal will be done.
