The Divine Ponytail sat down with the Corriere dello Sport for a lengthy interview and discussed the Milan striker’s complex career.
“I’d like to talk to Balotelli. He’s at the penultimate chance saloon, if not the last. If he doesn’t make the step up now, it’s a problem.
“He can be left with only regrets. In my view, he’s one of the best players in the world, but he seems to want to give off an image of himself that perhaps is not real.
“Who is the best Italian talent today? I have no doubts: Berardi. I like him a lot.
“Leo Messi is the best in the world. When he decides to score a goal, he scores it. I would’ve loved to have played alongside him. In fact, I’d still like that today.
“With the new rules and so many cameras capturing everything, I’d have been kicked less and sustained fewer injuries.”
What does Baggio dislike about the modern game?
“You don’t have enough pages… I maintain football is in the hands, or rather feet, of the players. I see that clubs now have an incredible number of players who come and go. I struggle to keep up with them. I think in the long run this makes it harder for fans to get really fond of clubs and players.
“Who will win the Scudetto? I know it might seem strange after the first three rounds, but am convinced Juventus still have something more than the rest.”
Baggio was appointed to the FIGC, but resigned in protest, claiming all his ideas were ignored.
“There was too much bureaucracy that relies on everything staying the way it is. I wanted to do something for youth football. Every year new talents emerge, but there’s no structure, no system in place. There’s an immense waste of potential and funds.
“Unfortunately, I had to go up against people who don’t know anything about football.”
