Milan Badelj felt like his ‘heart was going to explode’ after scoring the last-gasp equaliser in Genoa’s 2-2 draw with Hellas Verona and had a special dedication.

The Grifone were twice trailing at home to Ivan Ilic and Marco Davide Faraoni goals, and had gone down to 10 men because Luca Pellegrini pulled a hamstring on his comeback from two months out.

A corner was cleared to the edge of the area for Badelj to hit a right-foot rocket into the top corner.

“It felt like my heart was going to explode. If the fans had been there, I think it would’ve exploded!” Badelj told Sky Sport Italia.

“We put everything into this game. I am so proud of my teammates, we really did throw the heart of Genoa into this performance.

“We’ve got character and that is always evident.”

The midfielder doesn’t often score Serie A goals, so what was he thinking as the clearance came towards him?

“I just thought about hitting it cleanly and get it close to the goalkeeper, because with so many players in front of him, he’d have trouble seeing it.”

Former Fiorentina captain Badelj celebrated, as always, by holding up the 1 and 3 fingers to the sky, representing Davide Astori’s Number 13 jersey.

“I always feel that Davide is with me, every single day, especially in moments of high emotion like this.”
