Inter have received good news from Chelsea, because the decision to extend Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract means they are no longer in the running for Denzel Dumfries.

The Spain international turns 33 later this month and is able to play any role in defence, but primarily is a right-back.

His contract had been due to expire in June 2023, making him a prime target for Barcelona this summer, something the Blaugrana never even tried to hide.

However, this evening Chelsea announced that Azpilicueta has extended his contract with them to June 2024.

The Premier League side had seen Dumfries as the ideal replacement for Azpilicueta should he leave, which was what prompted them to make the approach for the Dutch international.

Now that their captain Azpilicueta is staying, Chelsea will effectively back off from making a bid for Dumfries, who had been valued at €40m.

In his debut Serie A season, Dumfries contributed five goals and five assists in 33 games.
