Ausilio: ‘Pioli best choice for Inter’

Piero Ausilio is sure Stefano Pioli is “the best Coach for Inter right now”, and denies confusion over his selection.

The former Lazio boss was appointed last week following the sacking of Frank de Boer, but reports suggested Marcelino and Gianfranco Zola were also interviewed.

The former Lazio boss was appointed last week following the sacking of Frank de Boer, but reports suggested Marcelino and Gianfranco Zola were also interviewed.

“It was a very calm and deliberate choice,” Ausilio, the Nerazzurri’s sporting director, insisted in an interview with Sky.

“We considered him to be a guarantee for the present and the future. He has already shown that he has great desire and passion to make the players grow.

“Interviews? I see the media has been at work, but it’s not something that we did. The owners arrived on the Friday, after the Europa League in England [against Southampton] on the Thursday.

“We saw those responsible and then we chose, it’s not anything extraordinary. We chose the best Coach for Inter right now.”

The aim at the start of the season was Champions League qualification, is that still achievable?

“At the start of the season we were aiming to return to the Champions League, and we’ll do the impossible to get there.

“We’re behind, but we saw last year some clubs that were behind at a certain point and then reached their target.

“We want to be in the Champions League, it’s the only thing we have in mind.”
