While Rennes fans are handing out free pastries to Milan supporters, Atletico Madrid ultras announced legal action against Inter, UEFA and the local authorities.

The experience of attending a football match can be very different, especially when crossing the border for European fixtures.

Milan fans are friendly with those of Stade Rennais, as both of them share the red and black colours, and they were greeted with a selection of free sausage rolls ahead of tonight’s Europa League play-off.

However, Atletico Madrid supporters did not have such a good experience at San Siro in Tuesday night’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Inter.

The Spanish media had already noted that there were still a lot of Atleti fans outside the stadium just before kick-off at 21.00 local time.

Over 3,500 had travelled for the big Round of 16 tie.

Now more details are emerging after the union of Atletico Madrid supporters announced legal action against Inter, UEFA, San Siro security staff and local authorities.

They claim that the group of away fans was corralled into a small space waiting to go through one door towards the turnstiles for security checks, which caused the risk of a crush.

The problems continued after the final whistle, with reports they were held inside the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza for over an hour and therefore had problems getting back to their hotels, as two of the three Metro lines had closed.

“We have always supported action against violent fans, but it is incomprehensible to extend that to all supporters. It is unjustifiable and we ask our club to adopt measures to ensure these unfortunate events are not repeated.

“You cannot treat thousands of people as if they were cattle.”
