The Partenopei entered the Audi Cup in Munich, where they will face either Bayern or Liverpool on Wednesday evening, but initially started Arek Milik, leaving Dries Mertens and Kalidou Koulibaly on the bench in the searing heat. They unveiled the new second kit, which is bright yellow.

It was all Napoli possession for the opening 20 minutes, but Atleti created the first real chance with Pepe Reina at full stretch to palm away an Antoine Griezmann header and Gaitan tried to back-heel the follow-up.

Napoli were awarded a penalty when Jose Callejon was about to tap in a Faouzi Ghoulam cross when he was both hauled back and tripped mid-air by Stefan Savic. However, Milik’s penalty was well saved by Jan Oblak.

A trademark Lorenzo Insigne curler was acrobatically fingertipped away by Oblak on the stroke of half-time.

Callejon did get the breakthrough when he peeled off his marker at the back post for a tricky volley into the ground on Ghoulam’s cross, which bounced into the far top corner.

Griezmann flashed a shot across the face of goal, but Mertens came off the bench and his first touch was a ferocious free kick beaten away by Oblak.

The goalkeeper also flew to palm a Ghoulam rocket over the bar after a long passing move, but Atleti equalised when Griezmann pulled back from the by-line and Fernando Torres improvised, turning it in with his heel.

Atleti had just 38 per cent possession in the first half, but went 2-1 up, as a corner was knocked on for Lucas Vietto at full stretch at the back post.

Godin didn’t quite grasp the nature of a friendly tournament and received two yellow cards for flying into shocking tackles on Mertens and Adam Ounas. He then refused to leave the pitch and had to be shoved off it by Reina. Ounas was left in agony and was helped off the field.

In stoppages, Kalidou Koulibaly’s header was plucked out of the air.
