Atalanta History

Bergamo’s finest have made over 50 appearances in the top flight since their debut in 1937, including last season’s best ever finish of fourth. Their trophy cabinet contains the 1963 Coppa Italia when they beat Torino 3-1 in the Final. These were the days of Angelo Domenghini, who went on to greater fame with Inter and Italy.

The club has launched the career of notable players, including Gaetano Scirea, Roberto Donadoni, Filippo Inzaghi, Christian Vieri and Riccardo Montolivo, while Cristiano Doni has cemented his place as a club legend. Atalanta’s ‘golden age’ came at the end of the 1980s and early 1990s when they were regulars in the top half of Serie A and the likes of Claudio Caniggia and Evair sent them into the Cup Winners’ Cup last four and to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

The ‘queen of the provincial clubs’ spent the first half of the millennium constantly moving between top flight and Serie B appearances. Following promotion in 2011, Atalanta have established themselves as a Serie A mainstay following promotion in 2011.

Meanwhile, La Dea will embark on a Europa League campaign for the second time in as many seasons, having been narrowly knocked out by Borussia Dortmund last term.
