It’s a huge clash in these Atalanta vs. Napoli predictions, as the second-placed Partenopei travel to La Dea who sit in fifth in the Serie A table. The pressure is on for both sides with every point crucial at this stage of the season.

Atalanta vs. Napoli odds

1 – Napoli to win – 21/10

2 – Under 3.5 goals – 3/8

3 – Mertens to score any time – 12/5

4 – Napoli to win 2-1 – 21/2

5 – Napoli to score a penalty – 11/2

Atalanta welcome Napoli to the Stadio Gewiss this weekend with just 12 points separating the sides. Both teams have been decimated by player unavailability in recent weeks, so Sunday’s match will be a real test of squad depth and managerial prowess.

It is fair to say that neither side has been at their absolute best in recent months, with Napoli only winning three of their last six games to lose the edge in the title race. Atalanta’s form has been even worse as Gasperini’s men have won just three of their 10 games since the winter break.

The Partenopei have undoubtedly been the better of the two, but are considered underdogs to win on Sunday, with their ability to score hampered by the absence of their top scorer, Victor Osimhen, due to suspension. Even so, with the bookies pointing in Atalanta’s favour, a bet on Napoli to win against the odds could provide a comprehensive return.

In contrast to Atalanta’s famed all-attack style, it is Napoli’s defence they can thank for their strong position in the league, having conceded just 22 goals this season. In fact, the Azzurri have not conceded more than one goal in a Serie A fixture since they last faced Atalanta on December 4, when Kalidou Koulibaly was out injured.

Even so, the visitors will be glad to see that their weekend hosts are no longer in the same strong attacking form. La Dea have averaged just 0.88 goals per game scored across their last nine matches, with Duvan Zapata’s injury far from helping the cause. As a result, a low-scoring game at the Gewiss would be a reasonable bet, especially given Osimhen’s absence.

Missing their star striker will obviously be a blow for Napoli, yet they have found a way to grind out victories in recent months, winning three of their last four games 2-1. In Dries Mertens, Spalletti has a more than capable deputy up front, who has seven goals to his name despite playing a limited role this season. Given how the game is shaping up, 2-1 to Napoli at full time with a goal from Mertens is an outcome worth staking on.

Another factor working in the Azzurri’s favour is the fact that Napoli are leading the Serie A penalty scoring charts, having converted 10 this season. With so many creative players absent, the odds of a spot kick deciding the game are higher than ever.

Atalanta vs. Napoli line-ups

Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Musso; Palomino, Demiral, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Zappacosta; Koopmeiners, Malinovsky; Muriel.

Napoli (4-2-3-1): Ospina; Malcuit, Koulibaly, Jesus, Rui; Fabian Ruiz, Lobotka; Politano, Zielinski, Insigne; Mertens.

Atalanta team news

Gian Piero Gasperini is missing a number of key attacking players with Duvan Zapata, Josip Ilicic and Jeremie Boga all sidelined through injury for Sunday’s game. Rafael Toloi and Joakim Maehle are also expected to miss out, meaning Atalanta’s line-up will be severely weakened against Napoli.

Napoli team news

Napoli’s top scorer Victor Osimhen is suspended on Sunday due to an accumulation of yellow cards, meaning Dries Mertens will step in up front. Amir Rrahmani is also ineligible for the same reason, with Juan Jesus filling in at centre-back. Injuries to Andrea Petagna, Alex Meret, Andre Anguissa and Giovanni Di Lorenzo seriously limit Luciano Spalletti’s ability to rotate for this weekend’s clash.
