With the Super League clubs insisting it’s impossible to sustain costs, it’s worth noting Atalanta are second in Serie A and their highest-paid player earns €1.8m.

La Dea are the top scorers in the Italian top flight with 78 goals in 33 games and, awaiting Milan’s trip to Lazio tomorrow night, are in second place on 68 points.

They are two clear of Juventus, who have 66, followed by Napoli with a game in hand on 63.

A week after the Super League was announced and then scrapped, Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini railed against the tournament for attempting to steal their ‘dream’ of qualifying for the premier competition for a third year running.

In both their seasons so far, Atalanta have gone further in the Champions League than any other Italian side, reaching the quarter-finals and then the Round of 16.

They are often held up as the ultimate argument against the Super League, and the statistics certainly bear that up.

The entire Atalanta wage bill for the 2020-21 season is €38.96m net.

Cristiano Ronaldo alone at Juventus earns €31m per season net.

The top earners in the Atalanta squad are Duvan Zapata on Luis Muriel, who pick up €1.8m per year.

Looking at the other teams challenging for the top four, Milan have a wage bill worth €80.15m and just signed 39-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic to a new deal believed to be worth €7m.

Leaders Inter have a total wage bill worth €132.13m, Napoli €103.85m and Juventus a massive €204.96m.
