Josip Ilicic had given Atalanta the perfect start, but their fitness levels fell away as Swansea City turned the summer friendly around.

This was practically the first real friendly of the summer for Gian Piero Gasperini’s men, who finished third in Serie A last season, reached the Coppa Italia Final and qualified for the Champions League.

It took all of five minutes to break the deadlock at the Liberty Stadium, with a dipping Josip Ilicic strike from the edge of the box.

It took all of five minutes to break the deadlock at the Liberty Stadium, with a dipping Josip Ilicic strike from the edge of the box.

Ilicic had several more long-range efforts, then set up Timothy Castagne to clip the upright, while Papu Gomez was only denied by desperate defending.

Once Atalanta started making substitutions and fitness levels fell away in the second half, their dominance was also affected.

Swansea got back on level terms just after the hour mark, as Hans Hateboer accidentally bundled into his own net after a quickly-taken free kick.

The offside flag was off for Borja, but after the referee went over to consult with his assistant, allowed the goal against Atalanta’s protests.

Moments later, the tension got to the Orobici and Swansea turned the game around with Connor Roberts left unmarked to nod in a Bersant Celina cross.

Substitute Luis Muriel threatened an equaliser for 2-2 with his free kick skimming the upright.

Swansea have won all six of their pre-season friendlies and this was the last of those, whereas Atalanta have only just begun their preparations.
