“Fortunately, we have a player who has exploded on to the scene and will become a big star,” Percassi told Radio Deejay.

“We are in no rush, but faced with certain offers, we will do what we’ve always done: monetise and reinvest. That is our approach to most players, because that is what has allowed us to grow this far.”

Atalanta are in the Champions League Round of 16, where they will face Valencia, having finished third in Serie A last season.

“The strategy of this club has always been the same, which is to balance the books. We invested heavily in the youth academy and every year we have reinforced thanks to those talents coming through, some of them staying with us, others who we have sold to more important clubs.

“We’ll continue to invest in the stadium, the training centre and our academy. If we maintain that focus, we can confirm our current status for the next few years. The important thing is that we continue to think like a ‘provincial’ club.”
