Newcastle United repeatedly contacted Atalanta to try and open talks for midfielder Ederson but the Bergamo outfit had no interest in negotiations.

A report from TMW details how the Magpies’ chief scout Steven Nickson visited the Lombardy city on January 15 to watch the Serie A clash against Frosinone before meeting with Atalanta to try and start talks for Ederson.

Newcastle were insistent on a deal for the Brazilian midfielder and were even prepared to invest over €40m in the 24-year-old, but Atalanta made it clear that they didn’t want to sell the player this month and continually refused any approaches.

La Dea would be open to letting Ederson leave in the summer, giving the Premier League side a chance to return for the midfielder at the end of the season. Tottenham were also linked with the Brazilian, so competition for his signature could be high.

This season, Ederson has scored six goals and provided one assist in 28 appearances across all competitions.
