Atalanta are set to begin demolishing one end of their stadium in Bergamo and next season will have to reduce capacity by 3,500 for the reconstruction works.

The Gewiss Stadium, formerly known as the Stadio Comunale, has undergone a radical revamp in recent years as part of the club’s investment along with the local council.

The third stage of the development will see the Curva Sud Morosini, the away section and Distinti Sud all knocked down, to be rebuilt and connected with an underground car park,

Demolition will begin on Thursday June 8 and the rebuild will take a year, so for the entire 2023-24 season the capacity for the stadium will be reduced by 3,500.

This will also be the season that Atalanta return to UEFA competition, as after this weekend they’ll know if it is the Europa League or Conference League.

During previous reconstruction work on the arena, Atalanta played their Champions League home games at San Siro in Milan.
