Atalanta director Luca Percassi noted it was “impossible to say silent” after VAR was not consulted for a very controversial Fiorentina penalty.
Federico Chiesa went down very easily, perhaps even before Rafael Toloi made contact, and Jordan Veretout converted the spot-kick.
It remained in the balance until stoppages, when Cristiano Biraghi’s free kick went in – as confirmed by goal-line technology.

“What we saw today was a very, very serious error. Referees can make mistakes, our philosophy is not to comment on these things, such as against Cagliari and SPAL, but after today in all honesty it’s impossible to stay silent,” Percassi told Sky Sport Italia.
“This type of incident leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. In such a decisive moment, the referee didn’t even bother taking the time to consult the VAR footage for a really evident dive.
“It’s sad that we have the VAR technology there and it should be ignored after several days of the entire Fiorentina directors, Coach and players laying the groundwork to ensure the slightest doubt would go their way.”
This is a reference to Fiorentina’s complaints following the defeat to Inter that VAR was either not used effectively.
“We fought like lions to have this technology introduced, but if an incident like this doesn’t even warrant consultation of the footage, then why is it there?”
